At the invitation of the Paris Bar, President Roden Tong attended the Opening of the Legal Year (“OLY”) 2024 in Paris, France, and its side events from 27 to 30 November.

On 27 November, Mr Tong had a courtesy meeting with the Paris Bar. The Paris Bar shared their experiences during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which included free legal consultations covering all areas of law. Apart from showcasing the Law Society’s initiatives in sports law, artificial intelligence and international internship programmes were also discussed at the meeting.

On 28 November, Mr Tong attended an international conference – “Sports, the New Legal Market? What Role for Lawyers?”, held as part of the OLY programme. The Conference emphasised the pivotal role lawyers play in the world of sports and featured inspiring testimonials from notable figures in the sports and legal fields. The importance of legal support for athletes and the legal decision in anti-doping case were discussed. Panel discussions explored the multifaceted role of lawyers, ranging from defending interests before courts to contributing to the governance of sports institutions and acting as mediator in complex scenarios.

The Solemn Ceremony for the OLY 2024 in Paris took place at the Théâtre du Châtelet on 29 November, in the presence of the Minister of Justice, members of the Parliament, Deputy Mayor of Paris and international bar leaders from around the globe. The Ceremony included passionate speeches by the President and the Vice-President of the Paris Bar, which received a standing ovation. The OLY programme concluded with a Solidarity Evening at the Opéra Garnier.

To conclude the trip, Mr Tong met with the French National Bar Council to further foster collaboration between the two professional organisations. He also had an informal get-together with presidents of bar associations from different parts of the world to make new connections.

Mr Tong took every opportunity to provide an update on Hong Kong’s robust legal system, diverse legal services and the Law Society’s work in the international legal arena to foreign counterparts.
