On 21 November, The Law Society of Hong Kong’s 7th Belt and Road Conference was successfully held in Hong Kong in a hybrid format, attracting over 500 participants from various sectors from 32 jurisdictions, including 23 representatives of the Consulates-General, Honorary Consulates and Officially Recognised Bodies. Themed “Legal Professionals Joining Efforts in Advancing Eight Major Steps to Build High Quality Belt and Road Cooperation”, the event scrutinised, from various professional perspectives, how we can pragmatically incarnate multi-dimensional connectivity and bolster cooperation among the Belt and Road nations.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the distinguished guests of honour for their gracious presence, including The Hon Paul Lam, Secretary for Justice; Mr Liu Guangyuan, Deputy Director, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR; Mr Fang Jianming, Deputy Commissioner, Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC in the Hong Kong SAR; and Dr the Hon Horace Cheung, Deputy Secretary for Justice.

We were honoured to have Ms Mengyang Yang from the China International Capital Corporation Hong Kong Asset Management Limited, and Mr Nicholas Ho, Commissioner for Belt and Road, HKSAR Government, to deliver keynote speeches at the Opening Ceremony and the Luncheon respectively.

Being the regulator for solicitors in Hong Kong, the Law Society acknowledges that artificial intelligence, represents both breakthrough opportunities and significant challenges for the legal profession. On this occasion, we were pleased to have 16 legal organisations from 10 jurisdictions joining our Manifesto – “The Legal Ethical Code of Conduct Regarding the Deployment of AI” in a hybrid format, facilitated by our LawTech Sponsor, eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre.

We also thank the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Professional Services Advancement Support Scheme, the four social event sponsors and the 42 supporting organisations for their unwavering support to our shared vision; the eminent speakers and moderators for their valuable sharing; and the guests and participants from across the world for making the event a resounding success.

As ambassadors of Hong Kong’s robust rule of law system, our legal professionals serve as key links among the Belt and Road jurisdictions.

The Manifesto emphasises the importance of responsible and ethical AI practices in the legal profession and outlines guiding principles for the development and deployment of AI technologies in this field.
