The 68th International Association of Lawyers (“UIA”) Congress was held in Paris, France, from 30 October to 3 November under the main themes Artificial Intelligence, and Fashion Law and Sustainability. Representing the Law Society, President Roden Tong attended the Congress alongside young lawyers Celeste Lo and Cathy Yuen.

On 31 October, the President was invited to speak at the International Bar Leaders’ Senate which aimed to explore the fundamental role that legal institutions play in protecting and promoting free speech as an essential component of democracies. Joining a panel of representatives from across America, Europe and Africa, he discussed the Law Society’s role and promoted elements of Hong Kong’s legal system, including the functions of the Court of Final Appeal and the Legislative Council, and the protection of freedom of speech as a fundamental civil right in Hong Kong.

During the Congress, the Law Society delegation engaged with fellow legal professionals from different parts of the world and shed light on the uniqueness of Hong Kong’s legal system. Taking the opportunity at the Congress, the Law Society delegation also met with the French National Bar Council (“CNB”) and the UIA on further collaborations.

Mr Tong’s sharing at the Congress was overwhelmingly received by the audience.

The Law Society delegation exchanged ideas with the CNB and UIA on strategies to promote the legal profession and legal practices globally.
