Representing the Law Society, Immediate Past President C. M. Chan attended the AALCO-Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre (“HKRAC”) Mission Trip to Cairo, Egypt, and Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, from 19 to 27 October.
In addition to meetings with local government departments, legal organisations and business institutions to exchange views on the latest developments and to explore potential collaboration, Mr Chan spoke at a seminar jointly organised by the AALCO-HKRAC and Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration in Cairo on 21 October. From a Hong Kong perspective, he provided an overview of the development of legal jurisprudence recovery, auction and licensing of art, antiques and cultural relics. During the trip, Mr Chan also took this valuable opportunity to share with the local legal and business community the advantages of doing business in Hong Kong, particularly in terms of tax and legal aspects.
On this occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) with the Egyptian Bar Association (“EBA”) was signed in Cairo on 20 October, further strengthening our ties with the counterparts from the Middle East and Africa.
The trip aimed to build opportunities and advance alternative dispute resolution; and strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a leading centre for international legal and dispute resolution services in the Asia-Pacific and beyond.
The MOU signed with EBA will further deepen our ties with the counterparts from the Middle East and Africa, creating plenty opportunities for the Hong Kong legal profession.
