Representing the Law Society, Immediate Past President C. M. Chan, Past President Melissa Pang and young members Max Lui and Emily Kwok attended the 37th LAWASIA Conference 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 13 to 15 October.

Before the official programmes had started, the delegation joined the 19th LAWASIA International Moot Competition and the Malaysian Bar and LAWASIA Pre-Conference Soirée on 12 October. At the LAWASIA Annual Council Meeting on 13 October, Mr Chan was honoured to be re-elected as a LAWASIA Executive Committee Member for the 2024-2025 term, while Ms Pang remained as the LAWASIA Immediate Past President. During the meeting, member organisations shared updates on major legal developments and challenges in respective jurisdictions over the past year.

The delegation also took the opportunities to showcase the Law Society’s work on various areas during the Conference by being speakers. On 14 October, Ms Pang gave an overview of the gender gap in the Hong Kong legal sector, and discussed strategies to bridge the gap, while Past President Thomas So (also Chairman of the Law Society’s Belt and Road Committee and eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre), shared his insights on the opportunities and challenges brought by the digital Belt and Road from a legal and interdisciplinary perspective.

Most memorably, a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) between the Law Society and the Vietnam Bar Federation was signed to further strengthen the work relationship of the two professional bodies, and to open up opportunities for professional exchanges among the respective members. Separately, constructive meetings to explore possible future collaboration with the Malaysian Bar and the Bar Association of India were arranged.

Themed “Navigating the Legal Landscape in the Digital Age”, this year’s Conference attracted over 500 delegates from 36 jurisdictions.

Meetings with the overseas counterparts always encourage realisation of collaborations conducive to respective members.
