At the invitation of International Association of Lawyers (“UIA”), Immediate Past President C. M. Chan delivered a speech at its webinar titled “What Bar Associations need to know to train their lawyers on Data Protection, Cybersecurity, and AI” on 11 September. Being the only speaker from Asia, Mr Chan drew from a Hong Kong perspective on the challenges the Law Society has faced in safeguarding cybersecurity for legal practices with actual case studies, while navigating the international legal community through the cybersecurity traps with realistic and feasible solutions.

As a regulator for solicitors in Hong Kong, the Law Society acknowledges that artificial intelligence (“AI”) presents breakthrough opportunities to the legal profession while also recognising the limitations and accompanying risks of AI. Mr Chan took this opportunity to introduce to the webinar participants the Law Society’s Position Paper on “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Legal Profession” released in January 2024, which contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the impact of AI for lawyers and legal service users.

Immediate Past President C. M. Chan spoke at the UIA webinar and shared his insights with the attendees on the latest developments in cybersecurity in Hong Kong and the Law Society’s work in the related area.
