Themed “Thinking Globally – The Role of International Lawyers in a World Searching for Answers”, the 62nd International Association of Young Lawyers (“AIJA”) Congress was held in Madrid, Spain, from 3 to 7 September, attracting over 700 young legal professionals from across the globe. Member of the Standing Committee on External Affairs and the Law Society’s representative at AIJA Eviana Leung, along with two young members Brian Ng and Peony Chiu, attended the Congress on behalf of the Law Society.
Taking the opportunity of the AIJA Congress, on 5 September, the Law Society delegation met with the AIJA leadership (President, First Vice-President and General Manager). The meeting went from the importance of Hong Kong internationally to the Law Society’s commitment to embracing global opportunities. Another meeting with the AIJA National Representatives Committee was conducted to bring the shared work priorities into realisation. The delegates discussed strategies to promote Hong Kong's legal services through AIJA, maintaining our strong presence in the international legal community.
A courtesy visit to the Madrid Bar Association (“ICAM”) was also arranged on this occasion. Building on the MOU signed between the Law Society and ICAM in April 2016, the meeting was an exchange of ideas regarding the legal industries in both Spain and Hong Kong. In particular, the ICAM encouraged further collaboration between the two jurisdictions.
Fruitful meetings with the overseas counterparts were arranged to discuss issues of common interest and the possibility of future collaboration to explore opportunities for respective members.
