The Korean Internship Programme is an annual initiative that the Law Society has been working with the Korean Ministry of Justice (“KMoJ”) and Korean Bar Association since 2014. Over twenty Korean young lawyers and law students interned in Hong Kong from 29 July to 9 August.
As the first item on the official programme, the Lunch Orientation Briefing on 29 July started with welcome remarks by Mr Amirali Nasir, Vice-President and Chair of International Legal Affairs Committee (“ILAC”) of the Law Society; and Mr Donghwan Shin, Director of International Legal Advisory Division and Senior Prosecutor of the KMoJ. The session was followed by three presentations by the Law Society representatives – Ms Hin Han Shum, Council Member and Chair of Young Solicitors’ Group; Ms Beverly Cheung, Member of ILAC; and Ms Olivia Kung, Member of Standing Committee on External Affairs and ILAC. They took a deep dive into Hong Kong legal and judicial systems, role and function of the Law Society, and their legal practice in Hong Kong. The subsequent free discussion session was an opportunity for the foreign interns to discuss what they had learnt in practical situations.
The Organisation Visit afterwards brought the interns to the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, eBRAM International Online Dispute Resolution Centre Limited, and last but not least, AALCO Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre. From a local monument to international institutes, this three-stop visit elaborates how Hong Kong has been moving ahead across the globe with its solid legal foundation rooted for over a century.
Commemorating the conclusion of this year’s internship programme, a Farewell Dinner was held on the last day of the internship. Invitations were extended to the local legal community, young members in particular, to expand the Korean interns’ and Hong Kong young legal talents’ international connections. In a relaxing ambiance, a heartfelt interns’ sharing session bonded every individual together, regardless cultural backgrounds. As a lively sendoff for the Korean interns before their journey home, the event featured an incredible performance by the Law Society's live band – TLF (The Learned Friends).
Lunch Orientation Briefing and Organisation Visit were held to welcome the Korean interns and introduce to them Hong Kong’s legal framework and history.
This year’s internship has set a new record as the most well-attended one among the many other successful internships since the programme’s launch in 2014.
President Roden Tong delivered welcome remarks at the dinner, and encouraged interns to take this opportunity to establish networks in Hong Kong.
