On 23 May 2024, the last day of the duty visit to the Middle East, the Law Society and the Dubai International Financial Centre (“DIFC”) Courts signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) to enhance cooperation as leading common law institutions, in the presence of prominent leaders including the Secretary for Justice Paul Lam SC. It is the first agreement of its kind between the Law Society and a Middle East courts system.
The conception of signing an MOU dates back to March 2023 when the Law Society’s delegation had the opportunity to meet with Chief Registrar of the DIFC Courts during the 31st Inter-Pacific Bar Association Annual Meeting and Conference in Dubai. Since then, the Law Society had been actively engaged with the DIFC Courts to put our intention to collaborate towards common goals into words. The MOU signing marked our efforts coming to fruition.
Deepening ties with the DIFC Courts would further strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a leading centre for international legal and dispute resolution services. The Law Society looks forward to closer collaboration with the DIFC Courts in making contributions to the legal frameworks and economic development in our respective jurisdictions and beyond.
