Representing the Law Society, then-President C. M. Chan, Vice-President Amirali Nasir and then-Vice-President Roden Tong were on a delegation led by the Secretary for Justice Paul Lam SC for a duty visit to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Dubai in United Arab Emirates (“UAE”) from 18 to 23 May 2024.
Apart from meetings with and visits to local government departments and a number of legal organisations, business institutions and enterprises, the delegation attended a networking luncheon titled “Hong Kong – The Common Law Gateway for Saudi Arabia Businesses to China and Beyond” in Riyadh on 19 May 2024 to provide an overview of Hong Kong’s unique advantages of enjoying strong support from the Mainland while being closely connected to the world under the principle of “One Country, Two Systems”. They also highlighted how Hong Kong’s common law system can facilitate the Middle East businesses and legal sectors in expanding their markets to the Mainland, Asia-Pacific, and beyond. The event attracted around 100 participants from local legal, business, and other sectors in Saudi Arabia.
On 22 May 2024, the delegation attended a half-day forum titled “Hong Kong – The Common Law Gateway for UAE Businesses to China and Beyond” in Dubai. At the plenary session themed “Hong Kong as an International Legal and Dispute Resolution Hub: A One-Stop-Shop for your Business Expedition”, alongside prominent speakers from the Hong Kong Bar Association, the Hong Kong Mediation Council and the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, then-President C. M. Chan shared with the audience the ease of setting up a company and re-domiciliation of foreign companies in Hong Kong, featuring the city’s high-quality legal services. Then-Vice-President Roden Tong also spoke at one of the concurrent breakout sessions themed “Effective Dispute Resolution in Hong Kong” to share his insights on general litigation and insurance law.
The visit aimed to promote Hong Kong’s legal and dispute resolution services and enhance cooperation between Hong Kong and the Middle East.
