On the occasion of the 32nd Inter-Pacific Bar Association (“IPBA”) Annual Meeting and Conference, the Law Society delegation met with various overseas counterparts that we have built close connection with.

On 25 April 2024, the delegation did not only join the Osaka Bar Association’s Friendship Meeting to further engage in meaningful dialogues with fellow practitioners in the field, but also had a meeting with then-IPBA President Mr Richard Briggs and his team to explore potential opportunities for future collaboration. Amongst other things, future plans with the IPBA to bolster Hong Kong’s position as a legal hub was discussed.

On 26 April 2024, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Japan, in which Minister Yang Yu took the time to meet with the delegation. During the meeting, the delegation provided an update on Hong Kong’s recent development. Notably, with the staunch support of the Central Government, the headquarters of the International Organization for Mediation will be housed in Hong Kong in 2025, which fully demonstrates the country's confidence in Hong Kong. The establishment has also fully leveraged Hong Kong’s role as an international legal and dispute resolution services centre.

On the same day, the delegation met with the Japan Federation of Bar Associations (“JFBA”). Subsequent to the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2013, JFBA has collaborated with the Law Society on various occasions, including the reciprocal Internship Programme since 2014. During the meeting, the delegates explored with the JPBA key members on possibilities to enhance future exchanges.

To strengthen the cross-border ties, meetings with various overseas counterparts were arranged during the duty visit in Tokyo.
