Led by the Deputy Secretary for Justice Horace Cheung, a delegation consisting of representatives from The Law Society of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Bar Association and the dispute resolution services sector, participated in the inaugural Riyadh International Disputes Week (“RIDW”) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 5 and 6 March 2024. The visit aimed to promote Hong Kong’s legal and dispute resolution services, foster exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and the Belt and Road region, and strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a centre for international legal and dispute resolution services in the Asia-Pacific region. President C. M. Chan and Vice-President Amirali Nasir represented the Law Society on the delegation.
As part of the RIDW, the thematic event titled “Hong Kong and Riyadh: Legal and Dispute Resolution Services for Businesses along the Belt and Road” organised by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre on 5 March 2024 was a highlight of the trip. The President and Vice-President, alongside other legal experts from Hong Kong, shared valuable insights on how Hong Kong, as a “super-connector” and “super value-adder” bridging the Mainland and Middle East markets, can provide comprehensive and diversified legal and dispute resolution services, as well as the investment and business prospects available in the city. The event received a positive response from over 150 registrants from the legal and business sectors in the Middle East and other regions.
The delegation also attended the 3rd International Conference and Exhibition organised by the Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration (“SCCA”) on 6 March 2024, where senior officials and industry experts from various regions gathered to discuss the development of dispute resolution in Saudi Arabia and globally.
During the visit, meetings with Dr Najem bin Abdullah al-Zaid, Vice-Minister of Justice of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and representatives of the Saudi Bar Association were arranged to introduce Hong Kong’s legal and dispute resolution services and explore potential future collaborations. The visit concluded with a Gala Dinner hosted by the SCCA.
