Earlier on, at the invitation of the Malaysian Bar, President C. M. Chan attended the Opening of the Legal Year 2024 in Malaysia from 14 to 15 January 2024. During the Ceremony, the Chief Justice of Malaysia, Attorney General of Malaysia, and President of the Malaysian Bar (also representing the Sabah Law Society and Advocates Association of Sarawak), delivered insightful speeches to commemorate the Opening of the Legal Year 2024. They reflected on the significant events impacting the rule of law that took place during the preceding year, and spoke about their visions and aspirations for the new legal year.
Subsequently, at the invitation of the Sabah Law Society and Advocates Association of Sarawak, Mr Chan also attended the Opening of the Legal Year 2024 in Sabah and Sarawak from 18 to 19 January 2024. On the first day, a precious sharing entitled “Arbitration – Some Pitfalls to Avoid” and a welcome reception were held at Borneo International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation. The following day, a series of ceremonial events were arranged to mark the Opening of the Legal Year, including the Ceremonial Procession in the early morning which stood an important role in commemorating the occasion.
President C. M. Chan seized the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with the overseas bar leaders during the two events.
Starting from the Sabah Hakka Cultural Centre, the President, together with the local Judges, legal officers and various overseas bar leaders, paraded along the scenic waterfront to the Sabah International Convention Centre for the Open Court Proceedings.
