From 1 to 8 September, President Roden Tong participated as head of a Hong Kong delegation to visit Xinjiang. The delegation, organised by the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in HKSAR and supported by the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, consisted of over 20 legal professionals from the Law Society, the Hong Kong Bar Association, Associate Deans of Faculty of Law of University of Hong Kong and Chinese University of Hong Kong, LegCo Members and other legal organisations.
During the visit to different cities in Xinjiang including Urumqi, Kashgar, Yining and Horgos, the delegation had meetings with representatives from different departments to gain an overview of the recent development in Xinjiang including the Legal Affairs Committee, Justice Bureau, People’s Court, People’s Procuratorate, Public Security Bureau, Lawyers’ Association and business corporations.
Through the face-to-face exchanges with Xinjiang officials, professionals and businessmen, as well as the personal experience of the rapid development within Xinjiang, the delegation saw promising opportunities for closer and mutually beneficial collaboration between legal professionals in Hong Kong and Xinjiang.
